Why I Do This

I got my insurance license by accident when I was 22. My aunts were claims adjusters, and on a whim, I took a licensing class without telling anyone. When I passed, I discovered I'd spent an entire month studying for the wrong line of insurance.

That could have been the end of it. It wasn't.

At 25, I took my first job in the insurance industry, in customer service. Over the following years, I moved through claims and bodily injury claims, learning this business from the inside out.

Fast forward fifteen years, and everything changed at once. I was let go from a job because I wanted to stay home with my children. As a single mom, I applied everywhere. No one called back. My insurance license was about to lapse, and I had two weeks to find the money to renew it, all while trying to keep the lights on.

Then the phone rang. A company wanted to interview me to sell health insurance — commission-only, work from home. I was terrified. But I said yes, because it meant I could stay home with my babies.

I told my manager the number I needed to hit each month just to cover my bills: $3,000. Then I got on the phone and started cold calling, working while my children slept just down the hall.

I made my first sale that same day.

I became obsessed — not with the money, but with how many people out there genuinely needed help finding health coverage they could actually afford. In five months, I had sold a million dollars in health insurance.

This business changed my life. All it took was one person willing to take a chance on someone with two weeks and no safety net. That person was me.
